1.1 Million Need Humanitarian Aid in Northern Mozambique

More than 26,000 people have been displaced from their homes in Cabo Delgado province between January and June, according to the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, contributing to a total of 1.1 million requiring humanitarian assistance in northern Mozambique as of 19 July 2026.

The UN agency reported on 18 July 2026 that more than 12,000 people were displaced in the province in June alone due to violence. June figures marked a sharp increase from earlier months in 2026, when monthly displacement had fallen to a few hundred people, though levels remained lower than those recorded throughout 2025.

Displaced residents have stayed within Cabo Delgado or moved to neighboring districts, further straining resources already limited by conflict and climate effects. Of the 1.1 million people in need, 919,000 live in Cabo Delgado province, where only half of those in need currently receive aid.

At the end of 2025 the United Nations launched the Mozambique Humanitarian Needs and Response Plan, seeking US$348 million. Six months later, US$116 million, or 34 percent of the appeal, had been raised.

Johanniter International Assistance has begun 12-month programs focused on healthcare, nutrition, protection, education, and assistance services. "Our consortium is committed to restoring healthcare, nutrition, protection, education, and assistance services for the most vulnerable," said Morris Kolubah, the group's country director in Mozambique.

The armed group Al-Shabaab carried out its first attack in the town of Mocímboa da Praia in 2017. The group has been affiliated with the Islamic State since 2019.
