1,347 Malawians Return Home from South Africa via Mwanza and Dedza Borders in 11 Days

Immigration authorities recorded at least 1,347 Malawians entering the country between 1 May and 11 May 2026. The returns were concentrated at two main border posts, with 777 Malawians arriving at Mwanza and 570 at Dedza during the same period. Sophie Chibenthu, the immigration spokesperson, confirmed the 777 arrivals at Mwanza Border Post.

William Kalanje, the immigration spokesperson, reported the 570 arrivals at Dedza Border Post. The combined total through these two points reached 1,347 in less than two weeks. Mwanza border authorities are receiving up to seven buses every week from South Africa carrying approximately 490 Malawians who are being deported.

Immigration officials described the overall influx of 1,347 Malawians in 11 days as abnormal and concerning. The officials said the pattern of returns suggests intensified enforcement actions and deteriorating conditions for foreign nationals in South Africa. Immigration analysts cited by AllAfrica said the current wave of returns reflects a combination of forced deportations, voluntary evacuations and mass displacement triggered by insecurity and economic pressure.
