Junior Slater, 12, from Clayton-le-Woods, Chorley, Lancashire, died after getting into difficulty while swimming with friends in the River Ribble at Ribchester. Lancashire Police said the incident occurred at about 14:00 BST on Tuesday. The force stated that his death is not being treated as suspicious and that a file will be passed to the coroner.

The family is being supported by specially trained officers and has asked for privacy.

The Royal Life Saving Society said warmer weather "unfortunately sees an increase in accidental drownings" and warned that cold water shock can make swimming difficult. Jim Bridge of the Greater Manchester Water Safety Partnership advised people in difficulty to "float to live" by lying on their back and letting breathing return to normal before seeking help.
