150 People from 50 Countries Become U.S. Citizens at Mount Vernon on July Fourth

One hundred fifty people from 50 countries were sworn in as U.S. citizens at George Washington's Mount Vernon estate on July Fourth. The new citizens sat in folding chairs on the lawn while family members stood in the shade. A U.S. Marine sergeant from Guinea attended in dress uniform with three medals.

Petri, regent of the Mount Vernon Ladies' Association, greeted the crowd and wished the United States a happy birthday. After a speech about George Washington, participants stood for the national anthem. As each country was called, individuals rose while holding small American flags. The group then recited the Oath of Allegiance.

Bradburn spoke about the tulip poplar tree planted at Washington's direction 250 years ago.
