The 2026 Beijing International Automotive Exhibition, also known as Auto China 2026, displayed 1,451 vehicles including 181 world premieres. The event has become the largest auto show in history by both exhibition space and number of vehicles. Wired reported that the scale of the show reflects a shift in the automotive industry toward China.

Chinese manufacturers presented high-end electric vehicles and large SUVs equipped with advanced driver-assistance systems and artificial intelligence functions. These technologies have spread to lower price segments, including electric vehicles costing less than 100,000 yuan, or about $14,500.

Lidar sensors and drive-by-wire technology, which replaces mechanical connections with electrical signals, appeared in multiple models.

07 XPeng Motors debuted the GX, an SUV designed from the start for Level 4 autonomous driving. The vehicle integrates sensors, computing infrastructure, and AI models, and is equipped with up to four proprietary AI chips delivering 3,000 tera operations per second of computing power.

Volkswagen has adopted XPeng’s AI chip and driver-assistance technology for its electric vehicles. The XPeng GX carries a price of 399,800 yuan, or about $58,000. 0 large language model developed with ByteDance's cloud division.

Geely introduced the EVA Cab, a minivan-type electric vehicle built for fully autonomous driving. The vehicle has no steering wheel, foot pedals, or driver's seat and features four seats arranged face-to-face. It is positioned as China's first robotaxi and is scheduled to enter mass production for commercialization in 2027 through Geely's CaoCao Mobility ride-hailing service.

Li Auto's L9 Livis employs drive-by-wire technology for steering, chassis, and braking with no mechanical or hydraulic connections. The model also includes four-wheel steering and electromechanical brakes. The company said the electronically controlled brakes respond faster than hydraulic systems.

The vehicle is priced at 559,800 yuan, or about $82,300.

Motors, a SAIC Motor subsidiary, displayed the IM LS8 range-extended electric vehicle with four-wheel steering, lidar, high-performance driver-assistance systems, and drive-by-wire technology. The model starts at 249,800 yuan, or about $36,700. This price is roughly half that of the Li Auto L9 Livis.

The Volkswagen Group showed its first mass-produced range-extended electric vehicle, the ID. Era 9X, developed with joint venture partner SAIC Motor. The model uses Volkswagen's new vehicle electronic architecture for the Chinese market and includes an AI assistant operated by voice and gestures.

Its maximum electric range exceeds 248 miles and reaches more than 990 miles when using the generator. Prices start at approximately 310,000 yuan, or $45,500.

The joint venture between Chery Automobile and Jaguar Land Rover launched the Freelander brand as a new energy vehicle line. The production version, called Freelander 8, is a range-extended electric vehicle that combines Chery’s electrification technology with Huawei systems and Contemporary Amperex Technology batteries.

It is scheduled to launch in China in the second half of 2026 as a large three-row SUV with plans for global markets including Europe. Hyundai debuted the Ioniq V in Beijing and said it will operate Ioniq as an independent brand in China. The vehicle uses Contemporary Amperex Technology batteries, Momenta driver-assistance systems, Qualcomm chips, and large language models from ByteDance and Baidu.

Toyota's local models at the show incorporate Huawei powertrains and smart cockpit operating systems. A new national standard effective January 2026 sets requirements for passenger car braking systems that include electromechanical brakes.
