2,944 Cyclosporiasis Cases Reported in 32 States; No Deaths Recorded

At least 2,944 cases of cyclosporiasis have been reported across 32 states as of July 10, 2026, according to data compiled by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and state health departments. Michigan recorded 1,562 cases and 44 hospitalizations, a figure 31 times above the state's typical annual total of about 50 cases.

New York reported 470 cases since May 1, while Ohio recorded 364 cases.

Illinois and Florida each reported more than 100 cases. The CDC recorded 843 illnesses and 86 hospitalizations as of July 9. The District of Columbia has recorded zero cases.

Maryland reported up to 32 cases since May 1, compared with 19 cases in the same period in 2024 and 18 cases in 2025. Virginia reported between 11 and 30 cases since May 1, including 10 cases in Fairfax County as of July 8. Michigan health officials said the working hypothesis points to food contamination, though no specific produce, grower or supplier has been identified.

The CDC stated that the true number of infections is likely higher because some people recover without seeking medical care or testing. The parasite spreads through food or water contaminated with feces and has previously been linked to imported fresh produce including raspberries, basil, snow peas, mesclun lettuce and cilantro.

Common symptoms include watery diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain or bloating, with onset typically about one week after infection.

Treatment consists of the oral antibiotic trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole taken for 10 days. The CDC recommends thorough washing of produce and hands to reduce risk. States have only been required to report cyclosporiasis cases monthly prior to the current outbreak.

The CDC is now requesting weekly case count updates from states due to the increase.
