200-Kilogram Cocaine Shipment Detected at Roberts International Airport After Weight Check
Documents and interviews show the six-container load passed security screening before discrepancies were found during a June 9 weight check.
thesouthafrican.comA shipment of six containers weighing approximately 200 kilograms containing cocaine moved through Roberts International Airport before its discovery on June 9, 2026. The cargo was tendered for export on June 4 under an Air Waybill listing the shipper as Emre Venn Group of Companies of Sinkor, Monrovia.
The consignee was listed as Usman Ali of Birmingham, England, and the route ran through Brussels to London Heathrow Airport.
On June 5 the shipment underwent security screening and received SPX status after both X-ray and visual inspection, according to the Consignment Security Declaration. It was then stored in the airport warehouse from June 5 to June 9. The shipment did not arrive at the airport on the day it was intercepted.
Instead, it spent several days moving through stages of the export process that included handling, documentation, storage, and security procedures. On June 9 the cargo attracted attention during a routine verification process conducted by cargo handlers prior to loading.
Discrepancies between the actual weight and the airway bill weight were identified, and the freight forwarder who delivered the shipment was no longer present.
Further examination after the verification led to the discovery of the concealed cocaine. Sources familiar with cargo handling procedures said the interception resulted from the secondary weight check rather than from narcotics interdiction procedures.
AllAfrica reported that interviews with current and former airport personnel suggest the seizure may expose deeper institutional challenges within the airport's security infrastructure.
