Shakira performed during the event, alongside Colombia's J Balvin, Afrobeats artist Burna Boy, Latin music star Danny Ocean and Fher Olvera.
Opera singer Andrea Bocelli and K-Pop singer Ejae performed the tournament's official anthem DNA, which was released Wednesday.
Performers wore indigenous clothing and gold outfits while holding giant golden footballs. A South African singer performed that nation's anthem before the match. Mexican singer Fernández performed the Mexican national anthem with the crowd.
Mexico is co-hosting the 2026 FIFA World Cup with the United States and Canada, which will hold their own opening ceremonies on Friday in Los Angeles and Toronto. Javier Pérez attended the ceremony with his family after obtaining hospitality tickets. "We were lucky to get hospitality tickets and it's a unique experience," he said.
