22-Year-Old Man Arrested in Connection With Mother's Death on Fuerteventura

Spanish authorities arrested the 22-year-old son of Katty Oosterlinck on Friday afternoon on suspicion of murdering the 56-year-old Belgian expatriate and dumping her dismembered body at a waste processing facility on the Canary Island of Fuerteventura.

Oosterlinck was reported missing Monday after relatives and friends were unable to contact her for days. A friend last saw her on the beach Sunday afternoon and said the family, including her daughter, had heard nothing from her since.

Locals formed search parties to assist police in the hunt for the woman, who had lived for a long time in the town of Corralejo. It was dismembered when recovered, according to local reporting.

The remains were transferred to the Institute of Legal Medicine of Las Palmas for examination. Authorities have not disclosed the cause of death. Police reconstructed events surrounding the killing with the suspect in custody and visited Oosterlinck's home in Corralejo along with other locations linked to the case.

The investigation remains ongoing. The son's name has not been released. U.S. and Moroccan teams located the remains of 1st Lt. , 27, in the Atlantic Ocean on May 9.
