22-Year-Old Man Diagnosed With Rare Cancer After Asthma Symptoms
A 22-year-old expecting father was found to have a large chest tumor after months of shortness of breath and wheezing. Doctors identified Ewing sarcoma, a rare bone or soft-tissue cancer. The couple's son has since been born.
NewsweekA 22-year-old man initially treated for asthma symptoms was later diagnosed with a large chest tumor that had collapsed one lung. His wife, Kensley, told Newsweek the couple was seven months pregnant when the symptoms began. Kensley said the couple first noticed weight loss, shortness of breath, and wheezing.
Doctors initially attributed the issues to childhood asthma. A pulse oximeter reading showing low oxygen levels prompted an emergency-room visit.
At the hospital, imaging revealed the tumor.
Kensley recalled the doctor stating there was a large tumor in her husband's chest. Further tests identified Ewing sarcoma, a rare cancer that can form in bone or soft tissue. Kensley said the diagnosis brought some relief because Ewing sarcoma has a relatively higher cure rate than some other cancers initially considered. Jason completed treatment, and the couple's son has since been born.
Kensley told Newsweek that quarterly scans continue to cause anxiety. She said the experience reinforced the importance of seeking medical care for unexplained symptoms.
