Over 250 Migrants Launch from Belgian Beaches as Nearly 600 Reach UK Waters

At least 250 migrants launched in small boats from Belgian beaches on Saturday, while nearly 600 migrants from Belgium and France entered UK waters. This event increased the total number of migrant arrivals in the UK this year to more than 6,000, according to GB News.

Shift in Smuggling

Tactics GB News reported that this was the largest single day of small boat activity along the Belgian coast since people smugglers changed their approach in 2026.

Smugglers have expanded operations to multiple Belgian beaches, in addition to a 70-mile stretch of French coastline, to evade French law enforcement. A senior maritime security source told GB News that this represents the biggest tactical shift by smuggling gangs in recent years.

Previously, Belgium saw an average of three to four small boat launches per year due to longer distances and active policing.

So far in 2026, approximately 25 migrant dinghies have departed from Belgium's coast. The source stated that smuggling gangs adapt to law enforcement efforts in France by expanding launch sites into Belgium, which increases travel time and risks for the vessels.

Crossing Details and Outcomes Extended

Some migrants who launched from Belgium on Saturday did not reach UK waters and were returned to France by coastal patrol boats. Despite windy conditions in the Channel, around 10 dinghies completed the crossing. Two Border Force vessels, Ranger and Volunteer, along with newly commissioned vessels Intrepid, Courageous, Contender, and Enterprise, intercepted the boats in the middle of the Channel.

GB News provisional figures indicate 585 migrants were taken to Dover harbor, bringing the year's total to 6,060. Winds increased in the Channel on Saturday evening and are expected to limit further small boat activity for the next few days.

Government Response

A Home Office spokesman told GB News that the government is addressing small boat crossings.

The spokesman stated that over 42,000 illegal migrants have been stopped from crossing the Channel since the election. Additionally, nearly 60,000 people without legal status have been removed or deported. The spokesman added that further measures aim to reduce incentives for illegal migration and increase removals of those without right to remain.
