Over 288,000 Germans Emigrate in a Year as Net Loss Reaches Highest Since 2017

More than 288,000 German citizens moved abroad in the past year, data from the Federal Statistical Office showed. The net outflow reached 97,000 after accounting for returns, the largest such loss since 2017. A survey by the job platform Indeed found that searches for international positions have more than doubled since 2020.

Two thirds of respondents said they think about taking a job abroad, and 30 percent had already applied or searched actively. Among those with household net income of at least 6,000 euros, 54 percent had explored foreign opportunities in the past twelve months. Higher income and better quality of life each drew 51 percent of respondents considering emigration.

A more pleasant climate or lower taxes and social charges motivated 42 percent, while 24 percent cited improved career prospects. Seventy percent said Germany's tax burden is too high relative to income and that personal effort at work does not pay off enough.

The United States remained the top destination with 14.4 percent of search queries, though interest there fell 34 percent from the previous year.

The United Kingdom and Switzerland each accounted for 13.6 percent, with U.K. queries rising 38 percent. Searches for the United Arab Emirates and India each increased 24 percent, while Australia saw a 10 percent rise.

Germany's advantages centered on security rather than growth, the survey found. Sixty percent of respondents named the social environment as the country's strongest point, followed by employment protection at 47 percent and the welfare system at just under 35 percent. Germany recorded net immigration of more than 200,000 people without German passports.
