The lawsuit alleges Costco renewed memberships without notifying customers between 15 and 45 days before charging. Russel George received a renewal notice from Costco outside the legally required 15-to-45-day window. California state law requires businesses to notify customers between 15 and 45 days before charging for another year of service.
Costco's membership cancellation process requires members to call a toll-free number or visit a warehouse in person. California law requires businesses to allow customers to cancel subscriptions using the same method used to sign up, but Costco does not provide online cancellation for members who signed up online. Costco offers a standard membership plan for $65 annually.
The company also offers an executive membership for $130 annually, which includes 2% cashback on eligible purchases. A preliminary hearing in the Costco lawsuit is scheduled for June.
