UK's Neso Forecasts No Major Risks to Summer Electricity Supplies
The National Energy System Operator published its summer outlook on Tuesday, stating no immediate risks to electricity supply. The report estimates a 75 percent probability of national demand falling to a record low of 11 gigawatts during the late May bank holiday. Solar capacity on the UK grid has reached 22 gigawatts after more than doubling over the past decade.
GB News# UK Energy Outlook Indicates Stable Supplies Amid Growing Renewables The National Energy System Operator (Neso) published its summer outlook on Tuesday. Neso stated that there are no immediate risks to electricity supply this summer. A Government spokesman stated that independent system operators had confirmed electricity and gas supplies would comfortably meet demand this summer thanks to Britain's diverse and resilient energy system.
Neso warned that the war in Iran is likely to push prices higher due to Britain's reliance on gas. Chancellor Rachel Reeves travelled to Washington for an International Monetary Fund summit. A Government spokesman stated that accelerating clean homegrown power, including renewables and nuclear, could enhance long-term energy security amid Middle East conflicts, though Neso also highlighted potential gas price increases.
Renewables Contribute to Projected Low Demand; Solar Capacity Doubles to 22 Gigawatts in Past Decade
Neso estimates a 75 per cent probability that national demand will fall to a new record low during the late May bank holiday, potentially dropping to 11 gigawatts. Wind and solar could simultaneously generate 18 to 19 gigawatts during the late May bank holiday.
" Neso anticipates increased use of stability tools due to potential overgeneration from solar and wind during peak conditions, alongside low demand forecasts.
Government Advances Solar Expansion Ed Miliband is pushing ahead with plans to triple solar capacity by 2030.
Approval was recently granted for the UK’s largest solar project in Lincolnshire. Mr Miliband approved the country’s biggest solar project in Lincolnshire last week. Planning rules have been relaxed to speed up solar development.
The updated Demand Flexibility Service was approved by Ofgem at the end of March. Providers can encourage people to increase electricity use when weather conditions result in excess supply. Households and businesses could get free or cheaper electricity for running appliances during periods of excess supply, such as sunny weekends.
Demand Flexibility Scheme Details The updated scheme enables customers to be rewarded for running appliances such as washing machines, dishwashers, and charging electric vehicles when demand is low.
The scheme is open to households with a smart meter whose suppliers are participating. Companies that have signed up to the scheme include British Gas, Equiwatt, and Octopus Energy.
