theolivepress.esMore than 50 organisations will hold a demonstration in Palma, Mallorca, on July 26 to protest the effects of mass tourism. The coalition is led by Menys Turisme Mes Vida, which translates to Less Tourism More Life. The group spearheaded widespread protests across the Balearic Islands last year.
Organisers staged a smaller gathering outside Palma Cathedral yesterday to announce the July 26 event. The demonstration is scheduled to begin at 7pm, with the cathedral area as the focal point. Cruise ship passengers frequently visit the landmark after disembarking in the city.
David Comas, a spokesman for the protest movement, stated that the Balearic Islands face a decisive summer season. "We can't cope with more tourists," he said. " Comas said young residents find it impossible to achieve independence or secure affordable accommodation.
He stated that thousands of workers exist in a state of maximum vulnerability due to the housing crisis. The July 26 date was chosen to allow smaller demonstrations in the preceding weeks. A total solar eclipse is scheduled for August 12.
The eclipse has triggered a surge in visitor bookings. Comas warned that hotel reservations will be completely full by the day of the eclipse, which will completely collapse the island. An estimated 15,000 people marched through Palma's streets in May 2024.
Approximately 100 activists surrounded the upmarket Cappuccino Borne restaurant near a McDonald's in the city centre during that demonstration, banging drums until police intervened. Around 1,000 protesters gathered outside Ibiza Council's headquarters one day before the May 2024 Palma march.
British holidaymakers heading to Menorca this weekend will encounter the first anti-tourism protest of the year in the Balearics.
