6.1 Magnitude Earthquake Strikes Off Cuba, Felt in South Florida

A magnitude 6.1 earthquake struck about 65 miles west-northwest of Mantua, Cuba, on Monday afternoon, according to the United States Geological Survey. The quake's epicenter was located in the southern Gulf of Mexico. The German Research Center for Geosciences recorded a magnitude 6.0 event at a depth of 10 kilometers.

Residents from Tampa and Orlando to South Florida reported feeling the shaking. The City of Miami stated that seismic activity prompted multiple calls for service across several areas. Miami Fire-Rescue responded to each reported incident. Officials said no significant injuries or major property damage occurred and all calls were handled without further issue.

The National Weather Service office in Miami posted that there was no tsunami threat to South Florida. The U.S. National Weather Service issued no tsunami warning or watch after the event. One report described a 6.4 magnitude reading northwest of Cuba, while other agencies recorded 6.1 and 6.0.

Shaking from powerful regional earthquakes has reached Florida before.
