Roblox Announces Age-Locked Account Tiers for Users Under 16 Launching in June

Roblox is introducing Kids accounts for ages 5-8 and Select accounts for ages 9-15, with automatic progression to standard accounts at age 16. The tiers, launching in June, limit access to age-appropriate games and restrict communication features. The platform, with 144 million daily users worldwide, builds on facial-estimation age-check technology rolled out last year.

Roblox Launches New Age-Based Account System Roblox founder and CEO David Baszucki announced new age-locked account tiers in a blog post published Monday.

The company is launching Kids accounts for users ages 5-8 and Select accounts for users ages 9-15, set to roll out in June. Accounts will automatically progress from Kids to Select at age 9 and from Select to standard accounts at age 16. The new system requires users to pass an age check before using chat features, placing them into age bands.

Roblox began rolling out facial-estimation age-check technology last year and rolled out new age verification features in December. The age-estimation system includes facial analysis and is used by more than half of Roblox's daily users. Roblox has 144 million daily users worldwide.

Restrictions on Kids Accounts Users who have not completed the age-check tool will only access games rated Minimal or Mild, with all communication features unavailable.

Roblox Kids accounts limit access to games with Minimal or Mild content maturity labels that passed a three-step selection process. All communication is disabled by default for Roblox Kids accounts. 4 years plus or minus for those under 18, according to Matt Kaufman, Roblox's chief safety officer.

Features of Select Accounts Roblox Select accounts limit access to games with content maturity labels up to Moderate that passed a three-step selection process.

Default communication settings remain unchanged for ages 9-15 in Roblox Select accounts. Users transition from Roblox Kids to Roblox Select accounts at age 9.

Background on Age Verification Efforts Roblox's age-estimation system includes facial analysis and is used by more than half of its daily users, Matt Kaufman, Roblox's chief safety officer, stated.

The company requires users to pass an age check before using chat features, placing them into age bands. These measures follow the rollout of facial-estimation technology last year.
