A 7.8-magnitude earthquake struck many parts of Mindanao on June 8. Sarangani province suffered the worst damage, with over 100 schools affected and students still out of class as of June 22. Gerlita Wata, principal of an elementary school in the province, showed reporters her makeshift office containing only items retrieved after the quake.
The school's sole printer was broken. In Barangay Poblacion, Glan, a tent city holds evacuees while many locals live outside their homes. Approximately 13,000 residents in Glan alone now seek new shelters.
Coastal uplift extended the shoreline and raised the seabed by as much as two meters, affecting fisherfolk and beach resort owners. Rappler reported that Senator Alan Peter Cayetano conceded the Senate presidency before June 22. Senator Sherwin Gatchalian then assumed the position.
Last month Senator Chiz Escudero offered his bloc to the minority to oust Cayetano in exchange for the presidency, but negotiations deadlocked over term-sharing. Escudero later supplied the decisive vote that gave the Gatchalian bloc a quorum. Pre-trial proceedings in the impeachment case of Vice President Sara Duterte began last week at the Senate.
Escudero is expected to preside over the trial.
