73-Year-Old American Marine Biologist Killed in Philippine Home Invasion

Kent Carpenter, a 73-year-old American marine biologist, was shot in the head and killed during a home invasion at his residence in Sibulan, Negros Oriental province, on Sunday night, July 12. Three unidentified men with covered faces forced their way into the house, shot Carpenter, and took a laptop, cash, and a backpack before fleeing, according to the Philippine National Police.
Carpenter’s 34-year-old Filipina companion was injured in the attack and is receiving treatment.
Investigators have not determined a motive as of Tuesday, July 14, and are working to identify the attackers. The U.S. Embassy in Manila was notified of the death. Regional police director Brig. Gen.
Romano Cardiño said the case is being treated with utmost urgency. “I have directed our investigators to exhaust all legal means to identify and apprehend those responsible at the soonest possible time,” he stated. Carpenter had lectured and collaborated on marine research at Silliman University since 1976.
He served as an expert witness for the Philippines in the 2016 South China Sea arbitration, providing written records on environmental harms from reclamation and destructive fishing practices. He also conducted research in the Verde Island Passage and supported its designation as a World Heritage Site.
In a 2024 video, Carpenter said he had been studying the Philippine marine environment since 1975.
Silliman University described him as bringing expertise in ichthyology, marine biodiversity, systematics, conservation biology, and evolutionary research. The Marine Science Institute of the University of the Philippines Diliman said Carpenter provided fifty years of guidance and companionship and remains an enduring influence on marine scientists, fisherfolk organizations, and conservation groups.
Father Edwin Gariguez, lead convenor of Protect VIP, said environmental advocates reaffirm their commitment to protecting the Verde Island Passage following Carpenter’s death.
