76ers Hire Cleveland Cavaliers GM Mike Gansey as President of Basketball Operations
Mike Gansey finalized a multiyear deal Friday to become the Philadelphia 76ers' new president of basketball operations. The 43-year-old replaces Daryl Morey after leading the Cleveland Cavaliers to the Eastern Conference finals.
ESPNCleveland Cavaliers general manager Mike Gansey finalized a multiyear deal Friday to become the new president of basketball operations for the Philadelphia 76ers, his agent Bret Just of WME Basketball told ESPN. Gansey, 43, has worked in the Cavaliers front office since the 2011-12 season.
He rose through the ranks to general manager and, alongside president of basketball operations Koby Altman, helped build the team into a consistent postseason participant.
The Cavaliers reached the Eastern Conference finals this season before losing in four games to the New York Knicks. The team finished with 52 wins and completed a February trade that sent guard Darius Garland to the LA Clippers for James Harden. Philadelphia ownership parted ways with Daryl Morey before the search for his replacement.
Bob Myers, president of sports for Harris Blitzer Sports & Entertainment and a four-time NBA champion executive with the Golden State Warriors, led the process. Gansey and Nick U'Ren, the top basketball executive for the WNBA's Phoenix Mercury over the past three years, were the two finalists.
Each candidate held final-stage meetings with 76ers ownership on the East Coast this week before the decision was made Friday.
U'Ren previously held multiple front-office titles under Myers during their time together with the Warriors. Myers will continue to work closely with Gansey and assist in implementing his vision for the organization. Gansey is a northeast Ohio native who played collegiately at West Virginia, where he earned first-team Big East honors.
He previously served as general manager of the Cleveland Charge in the NBA G League.
