Mike Gansey was hired as president of basketball operations for the Philadelphia 76ers. He replaced Daryl Morey, who was fired last month after the team was eliminated in the second round of the Eastern Conference playoffs by the New York Knicks. Gansey, 43, held his first press conference Monday at the 76ers' complex in Camden, New Jersey.

"It's not a championship caliber team right now," he said. Gansey is a Northeast Ohio native who played collegiately at West Virginia. He joined the Cleveland Cavaliers in 2011 and had worked as their general manager since 2022.

Jameer Nelson was promoted to general manager of the 76ers. Nelson replaced Elton Brand. Nelson was the 2004 AP Player of the Year at Saint Joseph's. Gansey, Nelson, and head coach Nick Nurse will report to Bob Myers.

Myers is president of sports for Harris Blitzer Sports & Entertainment, which owns the 76ers. Myers spent 12 seasons with the Golden State Warriors, who won four NBA titles during his tenure. The 76ers have not advanced past the second round in the Eastern Conference since 2001 and have not won an NBA title since 1983.

Joel Embiid, 32, signed a three-year, $187 million extension that begins this season. Paul George is owed more than $110 million over the final two years of his contract. Gansey said he had already held "good conversations" with Embiid.

He described Myers as a "cheat code" for the front office and said the organization would operate in alignment, including with Nurse.
