Richard Gadd Develops BBC Miniseries Half Man on Stepbrothers' Relationship

Richard Gadd, the creator and star of the 2024 Netflix series Baby Reindeer, is set to appear in a new BBC miniseries titled Half Man. The four-part drama, written and starring Gadd, centers on the relationship between stepbrothers Niall, played by Jamie Bell, and Ruben, played by Gadd.

The story spans several decades, beginning with their close bond in youth and progressing to a confrontation when an older Ruben interrupts Niall's wedding.

Gadd developed the concept for Half Man several years ago, before working on Baby Reindeer. At a screening event, he explained that he wrote one episode of Half Man prior to focusing on Baby Reindeer. He noted that the BBC expressed interest in the project early on.

The series explores themes related to male behavior, including violence and repression. Gadd stated that these ideas stemmed from considerations of how childhood traumas influence adult actions. He mentioned that experiences in formative years can shape brain development and prove difficult to change.

Gadd described the persistence of the idea as a key factor in pursuing it. He said ideas that he could dismiss quickly were set aside, but this one remained with him throughout the production of Baby Reindeer. The BBC's involvement motivated him to complete the series.

Recent productions, such as the 2025 drama Adolescence and Louis Theroux's 2026 documentary on the manosphere, have addressed related topics including misogyny among young men. Gadd indicated awareness of these conversations, though he emphasized that the show's inspiration came from personal reflection rather than specific phrases or trends.

Gadd clarified that Half Man is not autobiographical, unlike Baby Reindeer, which drew from his real-life experience with a stalker.

In June 2024, Fiona Muir Harvey filed a $170 million lawsuit against Netflix, alleging defamation, negligence, emotional distress, and privacy violations. Viewers had speculated online about her connection to the character Martha in Baby Reindeer. The lawsuit highlights potential legal considerations for content based on real events.
