Riverside County Standoff Follows Car Chase Involving Grappling Device and Ends in Suspect's Death

A car chase occurred in Jurupa Valley, California, on Wednesday, involving Riverside County Sheriff’s Department officers pursuing a white Cadillac on Antigua Drive. The pursuit ended when the vehicle crashed into a concrete wall near a school. The incident drew attention due to the use of a grappling device attached from a police car to the suspect's vehicle, which caused it to spin and collide with guardrails before the crash.

After the crash, a three-hour standoff ensued with the suspect inside the damaged vehicle. Authorities attempted to negotiate with the suspect, who did not exit the car. Deputies then deployed drones and armored vehicles, including a bearcat, and eventually used tear gas to approach the vehicle.

Upon entering the vehicle, authorities found the suspect dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, as determined by officials. The standoff followed an intense pursuit that originated from the suspect allegedly crashing into a wall. No injuries to bystanders or officers were reported in connection with the chase or standoff.

Video footage from a news helicopter captured an officer from the Riverside County Sheriff’s Special Enforcement Bureau using a phone while crouched behind an armored vehicle during the standoff. The footage showed the officer scrolling through profiles and swiping on what appeared to be a dating application before putting the phone away.

The Riverside County Sheriff’s Office stated it has initiated an internal investigation into the officer's conduct. The office reported that the behavior does not align with departmental standards or policies. It added that appropriate action will be taken based on the investigation's findings and emphasized commitment to professionalism and accountability.
