New York PostAn 88-year-old American woman died Saturday after she lost control of her mobility scooter and plunged off a pier into the water at Celebration Key in the Bahamas. The incident took place just before noon while the Carnival Celebration was docked at the port on the cruise line's private island.
Carnival teams retrieved the woman from the water and attempted resuscitation, but she did not survive, according to a company spokesperson. The Royal Bahamas Police Force said they are investigating the death of the 88-year-old American woman, who reportedly lost control of the mobility scooter and drove off the pier.
Authorities are treating the case as a suspected drowning, though they noted she is believed to have struck her head against the hull of the vessel before entering the water.
Two passengers who saw the incident told a Miami television station that the woman appeared to suffer a heart attack before falling from the pier. One witness described the scene after the event, saying passengers walked past the scooter and reflected on the incident while returning to the ship.
A man believed to be the woman's husband attempted to assist her and injured himself in the process, according to the witnesses. The Carnival Celebration was completing a weeklong cruise from Florida to several Caribbean islands at the time of the incident.
The company stated that its thoughts are with the woman's family. The ship departed on a new voyage the following day. Celebration Key opened in July 2025. In August 2025, two other Carnival passengers, a 79-year-old man and a 74-year-old woman, drowned hours apart on the island, which had opened less than a month earlier.
