Four-Year-Old Girl Regains Ability to Walk After Rare Brain Disease Diagnosis

A four-year-old girl diagnosed with acute necrotising encephalitis (ANE), a condition that causes brain swelling, has regained the ability to walk. Sienna became ill during a family holiday in November and was admitted to the intensive care unit at Queen's Medical Centre in Nottingham.

Doctors informed her parents that she might not recognize her father upon waking and to prepare for severe outcomes, as the disease led to loss of walking, eating, and talking abilities.

Sienna spent five weeks in the ICU. During this time, she communicated by pressing a button and received nutrition through an IV tube. Four weeks after leaving the ICU, she began talking and eating basic foods.

On her 100th day in the hospital, Sienna was discharged while walking with a frame and cleared to eat any food. Her father, Gary Dunion, stated that she remembers holidays, Christmases, and details of her life. He noted that she is one of only two children with ANE reported to have regained walking ability to this extent.

Ongoing Recovery and Support Gary Dunion said Sienna remains wobbly, has delayed speech, and requires further work.

However, she walks unsupported for extended periods, speaks in complex sentences, and plays with her sister as before her illness. The family has connected with others worldwide affected by ANE. Community support in Market Harborough, Leicestershire, has been significant.

Gary Dunion's former football team, Harborough Town, raised £50,000 in 12 hours, contributing to total funds exceeding £140,000. These funds support physiotherapy, neurological rehabilitation, and home equipment for Sienna's recovery. Gary Dunion stated that local support provided the most comfort amid worldwide assistance.

On Saturday, Sienna led a walk with her father at Priors Hall Amphitheatre in Corby to raise money for local children and families facing cancer treatment.
