Ableton released an Extensions SDK that enables users to add features to its Live digital audio workstation through JavaScript code. The company already offers Max for Live, which supports creation of MIDI effects, synthesizers, and samplers. The new SDK extends beyond those audio and MIDI functions to reach other parts of the program.

How the extensions work Users can activate extensions by right-clicking inside a Live project. The company supplied sample extensions that perform bulk track renaming, generate song arrangements from user-defined sections, and divide audio samples. One example extension lets users specify verse, chorus, and bridge lengths in bars, then automatically fills the arrangement view with labeled clips.

Another batches clip renaming from a single dialog. Additional examples convert MIDI data into music notation and rearrange drum loops with the open-source BBCut algorithm. A separate project demonstrated running the game Doom inside Live.

Availability The SDK is available for free download from Ableton's website.

It is not yet active in the released version of Live. Owners of Live Suite can test the feature by joining the Live 12.4.5 beta program.
