ACA Insurers File for 14% Median Premium Increase for 2027 After Enhanced Subsidies End

KFF reported on July 8 that insurers have filed for a median 14% premium increase in Affordable Care Act plans for 2027. The figure comes from 77 insurers with public filings covering 16 states and Washington, D.C. The proposed median follows a 20% median increase approved for 2026.

Insurers listed rising medical costs, federal regulatory shifts, and the end of enhanced pandemic subsidies as primary drivers. ACA enrollment fell by about 3 million people in 2026, the first notable decline since the program began. Middle-class enrollees at or above 400% of the federal poverty level face the largest out-of-pocket effects once subsidies no longer cap their share.

Final 2027 rates will be set later this summer after state regulators complete their reviews.
