Keith Sonderling was promoted to deputy secretary of the Department of Labor in April following the departure of his predecessor. As a Senate-confirmed deputy secretary, he can continue serving in an acting capacity under existing procedures. A White House official told the Washington Examiner that Sonderling is performing well in the acting role.

The official added that any announcement regarding a permanent appointment would come from the president.

Background on leadership transition Sonderling previously served as acting administrator of the Wage and Hour Division during the first Trump administration. He later served on the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission before returning to the department.

His predecessor left the department on April 20 after an inspector general investigation into travel practices and workplace complaints. Several staff members were placed on leave or dismissed during the same period.

Union and administration reactions One union official told the Washington Examiner that meetings with Sonderling had been positive. The official said the union supports continued focus on manufacturing and production issues. A separate administration source told the Washington Examiner that Sonderling is respected within the department and has improved internal operations.

The source indicated a nomination for the permanent position is expected. A Labor Department spokesperson did not respond to a request for comment.
