A director attempted a FaceTime call to an actress during the standing ovation after the Cannes premiere of the film Paper Tiger. The call went to voicemail. The director stated at a Sunday press conference that he had not informed the actress in advance about the call. He said he thought he might reach her but understood she was working in New York.

The thriller is set in 1980s Brighton Beach, the Gowanus area of Brooklyn, and Great Neck on Long Island. Two brothers encounter Russian gangsters in a city undergoing rapid change. The actress appears in the film wearing a blonde wig and glasses while using a thick Long Island accent. She plays the wife of one of the brothers.

The actress sent a note that was read at the press conference. In the note she described working on the film as one of the great pleasures of her career. She added that cinema has the power to connect people through shared experience and expressed hope that films can foster empathy.

The actors and director avoided political statements during the event. One actor declined to comment on past allegations about his on-set behavior.

The director said the story begins in the 1980s because that period marked the start of market-driven values he believes affected human integrity. One actor described filming during a New York heat wave. Another recalled shooting a chase scene in a field of reeds during a lightning storm that required production stops every 30 minutes.
