Adelaide University Moves Graduation Ceremonies to New Venue
Adelaide University has shifted graduation ceremonies from Bonython Hall to Pridham Hall. Students have started a petition opposing the change, and the university says it is reviewing options for future use of the original site.
Adelaide University has changed the venue for its graduation ceremonies from Bonython Hall to Pridham Hall following the merger of the University of Adelaide and the University of South Australia. The university stated the move was made to accommodate more guests and improve the experience for students and attendees.
Bonython Hall, a heritage-listed limestone building completed in 1936, hosted all graduation ceremonies for the former University of Adelaide until its last event in March.
Students have launched a petition urging the university to allow legacy University of Adelaide students to graduate from Bonython Hall. The petition has gathered up to 650 signatures from current students, alumni, and staff. A student who helped organize the petition said many students feel the decision was made without consultation and that the heritage buildings are an important part of the university's identity.
The same student noted that discussions with university staff are still in early stages.
The university's vice chancellor said the decision was made last year to expand guest capacity at Pridham Hall, a multi-use facility on the former University of South Australia campus. She added that the university is considering ways to include Bonython Hall in future graduation celebrations.
The vice chancellor stated the university will engage with students to explain the reasons for the change and explore options for using the historic building.
