Nearly $50 billion in investment commitments were announced at the inaugural Africa Forward Summit held in Nairobi this week. Nigerian industrialist Aliko Dangote’s promise of an East African oil refinery, valued between $16 billion and $20 billion, headlined the pledges.
The project is backed by the governments of Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda. French President Emmanuel Macron co-hosted the two-day event with Kenyan President William Ruto. Macron announced $27 billion in projects involving major French and African companies spanning energy, artificial intelligence, agriculture and logistics.
Officials framed the deals as a shift toward industrial partnership and private capital rather than traditional aid and security assistance. Ruto described the refinery project as a matter of geopolitical necessity amid fuel price spikes linked to the Iran war.
The commitments were presented as concrete steps to strengthen economic ties between Africa and France.

Both sides campaigned actively in regions considered strategically important within the Rift Valley. The Emurua Dikirr race, triggered by the death of the sitting member of parliament, has drawn particular attention. Election officials reported that polling materials were distributed on time and voting began smoothly at most stations.
