Aftershock Rattles Northern Venezuela Five Days After Twin Quakes

A magnitude 4.6 aftershock struck northern Venezuela early Monday, shaking Caracas and the port city of La Guaira. Residents left buildings and search teams paused operations for roughly 90 minutes at one collapsed apartment building in the San Bernardino district.
The United States Geological Survey recorded the tremor at magnitude 4.6, while Colombia’s geological survey measured it at 5.1. No new structural damage was reported by the leader of the Venezuelan National Assembly.
Search teams continued to clear rubble in La Guaira, where a man and his teenage son were pulled alive on Sunday. Venezuela’s interim president said the rescues showed that operations would continue. The government reported 3,150 injuries and nearly 800 buildings damaged. Twenty-four countries have sent 521 tons of supplies and more than 2,700 search-and-rescue personnel.
Hundreds of families remain camped in Caracas parks after losing homes. The United States announced it would double its aid commitment from $150 million to $300 million for emergency medical supplies, food, water and shelter.
