Global shipments of AI-powered smart glasses rose more than 300 percent in 2025, according to market research cited by Benzinga. , Samsung Electronics and other companies are expanding production as the category grows. Omdia reported in March that shipments reached 8.7 million units last year and could surpass 15 million units this year.

The increase reflects efforts by several technology firms to develop wearable devices beyond smartphones.

Companies face challenges in designing optical modules that remain light, thin and power-efficient while maintaining image quality. Jaehyok Kim, CEO of South Korean startup LetinAR, told TechCrunch that the optical module is the hardest part to get right.

Current designs often use waveguide optics that spread light across lenses but can reduce brightness and increase battery drain, LetinAR CTO Jeonghun Ha said. Mirror-based birdbath optics can produce brighter displays but result in bulkier hardware.

Platforms has sold AI-enabled Ray-Ban smart glasses since 2023. Samsung Electronics is preparing AI-capable smart glasses developed with Gentle Monster for a July event in London. Chinese firms including Huawei Technologies, Alibaba Group Holding and Xiaomi are also increasing investments in the category.

Citigroup noted that future growth may hinge on solving constraints around weight, battery life and optics rather than chatbot features alone.
