AI systems now produce hurricane forecasts in minutes rather than hours. Traditional models still require several hours of calculation. Officials continue testing the technology alongside existing systems.
cnet.comAI models can generate hurricane forecasts in minutes by recognizing patterns in decades of weather data. Traditional methods require several hours of human analysis to reach conclusions. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration has tested AI models for several years. Results have shown increasing accuracy.
NOAA scientist Hiro Murakami stated that adding AI to the SPEAR seasonal forecast model produced roughly a 20 percent improvement. He described the gain as significant. Atmospheric scientists at the University of Houston reported that AI has raised prediction success rates by an average of 15 to 30 percent compared with traditional models.
Colorado State University and the University of Chicago have also incorporated the technology. Google’s DeepMind model helped forecast the rapid intensification of a recent major storm. Earlier warnings allowed additional evacuation time and preparation.
DeepMind completes forecasts eight times faster than conventional models, according to Google. The system runs additional simulations at lower cost. Data quality remains central to further gains. Phil Klotzbach of Colorado State University said better input data produces better output.
AI models require historical examples to make accurate predictions. One meteorologist noted that unprecedented storm conditions may fall outside existing data sets. Another forecaster said the models can still identify major storms even when intensity exceeds prior records. Data centers that power AI consume large amounts of electricity and water, which in turn rely on fossil fuels.
