GRAI, founded by Belarusian entrepreneurs who previously sold their video creation app VOCHI to Pinterest, focuses on AI-driven music interaction beyond generation from scratch. The company released the remixing app Music with Friends for iOS and an AI music playground app for Android.
These products aim to enable users to remix tunes, share them with friends or change track styles for fun, while prioritizing artist consent.
The co-founder and CEO of GRAI is currently based in Poland, where much of the GRAI team operates. The CTO and co-founder of GRAI serves as CTO, while the president and co-founder is the president. The company positions itself amid existing AI music startups like Suno and Udio, which leverage artificial intelligence for music generation.
GRAI distinguishes itself by emphasizing remixing and social engagement over pure generation. TechCrunch reported that GRAI developed its own taste and participation graph, along with infrastructure including a derivatives pipeline and real-time audio systems to preserve original track identities during transformations.
The company intends to work with artists and labels to legalize such activities, potentially creating new royalty streams.
GRAI targets Gen Z and Gen Alpha users who discover music through friends, fandoms and short-form content like TikTok, without aspiring to be full creators. The startup addresses perceived issues in music, such as broken discovery, passive listening and lacking social context. GRAI plans to gather consumer feedback through its initial apps to refine products.
The CEO noted that the team started by approaching labels for permission rather than building first. Sarah Perez, who reported on the development for TechCrunch, has worked as a reporter for the outlet since August 2011. She previously spent over three years at ReadWriteWeb.
