Aid Groups Launch Appeal After Venezuela Earthquake Kills 1,700

Humanitarian organizations have launched an urgent appeal for shelter, food, water and medical care after two earthquakes struck Venezuela last week. The Disasters Emergency Committee said thousands of survivors are sleeping in makeshift tents and lack basic services. At least 1,700 people have been confirmed dead and roughly 46,000 remain unaccounted for.

The Disasters Emergency Committee brings together 14 aid charities, including the British Red Cross, Oxfam and Save the Children. Local partners are distributing drinking water, hygiene kits and emergency sanitation systems. Dunia de Barnola, country director for Action Against Hunger, said older residents are especially vulnerable because many lack access to basic services.

Early estimates indicate about 2,500 buildings have been destroyed. The Disasters Emergency Committee warned that needs could grow if additional assistance is not provided soon. Saleh Saeed, chief executive of the Disasters Emergency Committee, said many families have lost homes and are living on the street. The group urged the British public to donate to support ongoing relief operations.
