Air Canada will cancel or delay eight routes between Canada and the United States beginning this fall. Three routes from Toronto and Montreal to cities in the Midwest will be suspended for a second winter. Three seasonal routes from Ottawa, Montreal and Quebec City to Florida will begin in December instead of October.
Two routes from Montreal and Toronto to New York's JFK airport that were previously suspended will remain out of service this winter.
Canada, WestJet and Air Transat reduced summer flights to the United States earlier this year after jet fuel prices increased. Statistics Canada data show the number of Canadians returning by air from the United States fell 28 per cent year-over-year to fewer than 462,000 in May.
A spokesperson for Air Canada said the airline regularly reviews its schedule to match capacity with demand and seasonal patterns. The carrier plans to resume service to JFK at a later date and will operate up to five daily flights between Toronto's Billy Bishop airport and LaGuardia Airport this winter.
