The U.S. Air Force announced on July 7 that a scoring error on a required promotion exam had led to incorrect notifications for 135 security forces airmen, who serve as the service's law enforcement and security personnel. An outdated answer key was used to grade the test, prompting the service to rescind the promotions to technical sergeant that had been issued.
Out of 586 airmen initially selected for promotion, 451 will retain their advancements after the exams were rescored with the correct key. A separate group of 135 airmen who had been incorrectly denied promotions due to the error will now advance, the Air Force said. Chief Master Sgt.
Of the Air Force David Wolfe stated that the service owed it to those affected to address the matter immediately. "This is going to be hard for everyone impacted," he said. Lt. Gen. Jefferson O’Donnell said the Air Force promotes airmen based on merit established in federal law and policy.
"Who we are as an Air Force, defined by our core values, demands integrity in the meritocratic promotion system," he added. Airmen's promotions are determined by a combination of testing, schooling and length of service. Air Force officials said they are evaluating additional safeguards for the promotion process and described the incident as an isolated and highly unprecedented anomaly.
