Air India crash inquiry continues one year after disaster

India's Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau said on the first anniversary of the crash that investigators have made significant progress examining aircraft systems, flight recorder data, engine components, and maintenance records. The statement did not set a date for completing the inquiry or issuing the final report.

It said every aspect of the accident will be examined with care and diligence.

Crash details The Boeing 787 Dreamliner crashed shortly after takeoff from Ahmedabad on 12 June 2025 while flying to London. The aircraft came down about 6 km from the airport, striking a building used as doctors' accommodation at Byramjee Jeejeebhoy Medical College and Civil Hospital.

The crash killed 241 people on board and 19 people on the ground. Among those killed were 169 Indian nationals and 53 Britons. One passenger survived.

Earlier findings A preliminary report published in July 2025 stated that fuel-control switches moved to the cut-off position seconds after takeoff, causing total power loss. Cockpit audio recorded one pilot asking why the switches had been moved and the other replying that he had not done so.

The statement released Friday emphasized that the investigation's sole purpose is to improve aviation safety and not to assign blame.
