The Imperial County Air Pollution Control District issued an air quality alert covering El Centro, Calexico, Brawley, Salton City and surrounding areas. m. m. Wednesday. The alert is based on forecasts of shifting winds that are expected to lift dust and raise particulate levels. The Imperial Valley experiences such events during periods of strong wind and dry soil.

Particle pollution consists of microscopic particles that can lodge deep in the lungs. The district stated that these particles can trigger asthma attacks, worsen heart and lung disease symptoms, and increase the chance of lung infections. Officials recommend that residents monitor the Air Quality Index and limit outdoor exertion when levels reach the unhealthy range.

People advised to take extra precautions include older adults, children, pregnant individuals, and those with preexisting heart or lung conditions.

To reduce exposure, residents are encouraged to keep windows and doors closed, run air conditioning or air purifiers, and avoid devices that draw outside air. Officials also suggest reducing indoor pollution sources such as candles, fireplaces, and gasoline-powered equipment.

The district further recommends limiting outdoor particle sources by reducing driving, carpooling, using public transportation, and slowing on dirt roads. Current air quality across much of Southern California is rated moderate, according to the EPA's AirNow website. S.
