Airbnb CEO Says AI Now Writes Nearly 60% of Company Code
Brian Chesky disclosed on an earnings call that artificial intelligence now produces nearly 60 percent of the code written by Airbnb engineers. He said the change is allowing teams to ship features faster while requiring managers to code directly. Chesky's remarks follow similar disclosures from Shopify and Google executives.
Airbnb CEO Brian Chesky said nearly 60% of the code the company's engineers produce is written by AI. Chesky made the disclosure during a Thursday earnings call. He stated that AI writing code means Airbnb's teams are shipping more features and iterating more quickly.
Chesky added that managers will have to get their hands dirty with coding. He said there is no room at Airbnb for pure people managers.
"I'm seeing, like many of our design managers and engineering managers, going back to coding or using Claude Code," he said. However, he said it is way too early to say what the implications are about how Airbnb will structure its teams in the future.
The comments position Chesky as the latest technology executive to highlight AI's growing role in software development. Shopify's president Harley Finkelstein said 50% of the company's code was AI-generated on a Tuesday earnings call.
Google recently stated that 75% of its code is AI-generated. His remarks reflect a broader push by companies to integrate AI into core engineering workflows while reshaping managerial responsibilities.
Business Insider reported that Chesky's comments on the diminishing relevance of pure people managers align with efforts by other executives in recent years to remove layers of management in favor of flatter structures.
