AirTag-Equipped Bags Recorded 90 Percent Drop in Permanent Losses

Bags containing an Apple AirTag or Find My network accessory recorded a 90 percent decrease in the number of bags that remained truly lost, according to the SITA 2026 Baggage IT Insights report. Airlines that integrated Apple Find My and Share Item Location into the SITA WorldTracer system also cut recovery time for delayed bags by 26 percent.
Euronews reported that the findings came from SITA WorldTracer, a baggage automation system used by 500 airlines and 2,800 airports.
The report covered global operations in 2025. Mishandling rates fell 23 percent in 2025 while total mishandled bag volumes dropped 19 percent, reaching the lowest figures recorded outside the pandemic period. Transfer baggage mishandling accounted for 39 percent of all cases.
Ticketing errors, bag switching, and security issues caused 18 percent of delays. Failure to load produced 16 percent, while customs, weather, space or weight restrictions, and airports contributed 11 percent. Loading or offloading errors made up 8 percent, and tagging errors along with arrival station mishandling each caused 4 percent.
A total of 24 million bags were mishandled worldwide in 2025, at a rate of 4.9 bags per 1,000 passengers.
