Al Jazeera Network Launched in 1996 Under Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani

Al Jazeera began operations in late November 1996 with a half-hour news bulletin after six hours of daily trial broadcasts. The channel was created to operate according to professional journalism standards with a stated commitment to presenting multiple viewpoints.

Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani directed the establishment of the channel and met with the author to outline plans for a television news outlet. Construction of the facility occurred near Qatar Television, with equipment installed for broadcasting and satellite transmission.

A board of directors was formed and a director general appointed. Journalists and technical staff were recruited, and the newsroom began operations. The channel faced opposition and pressure from Arab and international sources but maintained its editorial approach.

Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani succeeded his father and also declined external requests to alter the network's editorial policies. He maintained the same position of non-interference provided operations adhered to professional rules. The network expanded from its initial broadcasts to occupy a position in both traditional and digital media sectors.
