The Albanian government has approved a major foreign investment project at the Vjosa-Narta lagoon on the Adriatic coast that is backed by Jared Kushner. The site was previously zoned for development and is expected to bring tourism revenue and jobs to the area.
Hundreds of Albanians gathered at the lagoon on Saturday and held additional rallies in Tirana to protest the project. Demonstrators said construction would threaten the area's ecological value because the lagoon is designated as a nature reserve.
According to Prime Minister Edi Rama, the project has received government approval but has not yet received final approval. Rama stated that "top experts will be involved in the project, which has yet to be approved."
The resort remains in the planning stage and requires additional regulatory steps before any work can begin.
