Alberta to add separatism question to fall referendum ballot
Premier Danielle Smith announced the province will place a question on separation before voters this fall. Calgary officials said the debate could affect employment and investment decisions first in the city.
The question will ask voters whether they want to remain in Canada or proceed to a binding vote on leaving the country. Calgary's mayor stated on Friday that the uncertainty created by the debate will reach the city first and could reduce employment and slow investment. The mayor described the measure as a distraction from issues such as housing and infrastructure.
Commerce president and CEO Deborah Yedlin said the debate introduces a controllable risk at a time when the province is seeking to expand oil and gas exports. She noted that recent federal-provincial agreements had opened the possibility of a new pipeline and additional economic activity.
Yedlin added that the prospect of separation raises questions about the regulatory framework for businesses and could affect the movement of workers into the province.
Public views Some residents interviewed in Calgary on Friday said they preferred that the province focus on education funding and health care instead of the referendum. Others expressed support for the question, citing concerns over representation in Parliament and the equalization system.
The mayor indicated plans to participate in the public discussion to outline potential economic effects if separation proceeds.
