Alessandro Bastoni Scores in Inter Milan Victory Over Roma After Italy World Cup Setback
Inter Milan defeated Roma 2-1 in Serie A, with Alessandro Bastoni providing an assist amid his recent challenges following Italy's World Cup qualifying loss. Bastoni had faced criticism and jeers after a red card in the playoff against Bosnia and a controversial incident in the Derby d'Italia. The win helped Inter maintain their lead in the league standings.
espn.co.ukInter Milan secured a 2-1 victory over Roma at San Siro on Sunday, with defender Alessandro Bastoni contributing an assist in the second half. The match came after Inter's recent dip in form, where they won none of their four games in April. Bastoni, who has been targeted by jeers in away matches for Inter, played a role in the team's recovery.
Italy hosted their World Cup qualifying playoff semi-final against Northern Ireland in Bergamo rather than San Siro, as decided by coach Gennaro Gattuso. Gattuso cited the presence of rival clubs Milan and Inter at San Siro as a factor that could lead to fan criticism during struggles.
Italy advanced past Northern Ireland but lost to Bosnia on penalties in Zenica after Bastoni received a red card in the first half while Italy led 1-0.
Bastoni faced backlash in Italy following the February Derby d'Italia against Juventus, where he was involved in an incident that led to Pierre Kalulu's sending off. Bastoni later apologized at a press conference, stating he had exaggerated contact with Kalulu and described his reaction to the red card as "really ugly".
He reported receiving death threats directed at his wife, Camilla Bresciani, via social media.
Since the Derby d'Italia, Bastoni has been jeered by fans in Inter's away games, including at Lecce and Como's Stadio Sinigaglia, despite no traditional rivalry with those clubs. A banner from Inter ultras was displayed outside the club's training ground on Saturday, reading: "Heads up and fear nothing.
" The message appeared directed at Bastoni and Italy teammates Federico Dimarco, Nicolò Barella, Davide Frattesi, and Pio Esposito, who missed a penalty in the Bosnia shootout.
Inter led Serie A by 10 points at the start of March but drew against Como in the Coppa Italia semi-final first leg, lost to Milan, and drew with Atalanta and Fiorentina in league play during April. A loss to Roma could have reduced their lead to three or four points over Milan or Napoli, who played each other on Monday.
Roma, sixth in the table, sought a Champions League spot and had conceded fewer goals than all but Como in Serie A this season.
In the match, Marcus Thuram scored the opener in the first minute by gliding past Evan Ndicka and assisting Lautaro Martínez, who finished into the net. Martínez, Serie A's top scorer, had returned from a calf injury sustained in February. Bastoni assisted the second goal with a header to Davies Frattesi in the 54th minute, securing the win despite Roma's response.
Barcelona has shown interest in signing Bastoni this summer, according to reports. Inter's victory positions them to potentially extend their lead, with upcoming fixtures influencing the title race. The result affects Roma's pursuit of a top-four finish.
