Alex Eala beats Elina Svitolina 6-3 6-4 in Berlin Open quarterfinal

Alex Eala defeated Elina Svitolina 6-3, 6-4 in the Berlin Open quarterfinals at Steffi Graf Stadion early Saturday morning Philippines time. The 21-year-old Filipina broke serve in the second game of the first set and built a 3-0 lead. Svitolina broke back in the seventh game to narrow the gap to 4-3, but Eala broke again in the eighth and held to close the set 6-3.

Eala posted a 69 percent first-serve rate in the opening set compared with Svitolina’s 62 percent. She won 15 of 26 first-serve points while Svitolina won 11; Svitolina recorded four aces to Eala’s one. In the second set Eala won an 18-point opening game to break and led 2-0.

Svitolina leveled at 2-2 before Eala broke in the fifth and seventh games to reach 5-2. The Ukrainian broke back to 5-4, but Eala held in the tenth game to finish the match. Across the match Eala led 13-9 in first-serve return points won and 21-19 in second-serve return points won.

Eala’s next opponent is world No. 13 Linda Nosková in the semifinals. The Filipina holds a 1-13 career record against Czech players. Eala reached the quarterfinals by defeating Elena Rybakina. She defeated Madison Keys and Iga Świątek at the 2025 Miami Open and now has six career victories against top-ten opponents.
