Algeria Defeats Jordan 2-1 in World Cup Group Stage
Algeria scored twice in the second half to beat Jordan 2-1 on June 23 2026. The result leaves Algeria level with Austria on three points in Group J after Argentina's earlier win.

Algeria defeated Jordan 2-1 in a World Cup group stage match on June 23 2026. Al Jazeera reported that substitute Nadhir Benbouali headed an equalizer in the 69th minute and Amine Gouiri scored the winner eight minutes from time. Jordan had taken the lead through Nizar Al-Rashdan in the 36th minute.
Algeria coach Vladimir Petkovic introduced Nabil Bentaleb and Benbouali at half time after starting Riyad Mahrez following his omission against Argentina. Benbouali scored from a corner delivered by Mahrez. Gouiri's goal came after a corner from substitute Anis Hadj Moussa deflected off Al-Rashdan.
Algeria had lost their opening match 3-0 to Argentina while Jordan lost 3-1 to Austria. Argentina beat Austria 2-0 earlier on June 23 and will advance as group winners. Lionel Messi has scored all five of Argentina's goals at the tournament.
Algeria finished the match on three points in Group J. The team will face Austria in Kansas City Missouri on Saturday while Jordan plays Argentina. Al Jazeera reported that the Austria match revives a fixture from the 1982 World Cup known as the Disgrace of Gijon when the two sides were alleged to have colluded against Algeria.
FIFA cleared both teams of wrongdoing at the time.
