Algeria Goalkeeper Luca Zidane Makes Ninth Appearance for National Team

Algeria goalkeeper Luca Zidane started his ninth match for the national team in a Group J game against Jordan on June 22. Zidane, 28, was born in France and played at youth level for that country before switching to Algeria, where his grandparents were born. He told The Athletic that the decision was his but followed discussions with family members.

Zidane, Luca's father, won the 1998 World Cup with France and was named FIFA Player of the Year three times. He later managed Real Madrid to three Champions League titles. All four of Zinedine Zidane's sons trained at the Real Madrid academy, and Luca was occasionally called to train with the senior squad during his father's tenure as manager.

Zidane has worn a facial mask since fracturing his chin and jaw in a collision for Granada in April. He returned to play in a June 3 friendly after missing more than a month. Algeria coach Vladimir Petkovic said after the previous match that mistakes are part of the game.
