Alibaba Releases 2.4-Trillion-Parameter Qwen3.8 Model Days After Moonshot Unveils Larger System

Alibaba Group Holding unveiled its Qwen3.8-Max-Preview model on July 19, with the 2.4-trillion-parameter system ranking second only to Anthropic’s Claude Fable 5. The company made the preview available the same day on its Token Plan subscription service as well as the Qoder and QoderWork agentic platforms and announced the release in an official post on X.

The timing coincided with the final days of the World AI Conference held in Shanghai, where the company displayed its Qwen branding at the event. Three days earlier, Beijing-based Moonshot AI had unveiled its own Kimi K3 model, which carries 2.8 trillion parameters and is currently the largest open-source system of its kind.

Parameters serve as a measure of model complexity, with larger counts typically associated with greater capability.

Alibaba described Qwen3.8-Max-Preview as one of the most powerful models available and comparable to leading frontier systems.
